tanzania safari

I recently returned from a trip to Tanzania and wanted to share a few tips and suggestions for others who may be interested in planning their own African safari experience.

HIGHLIGHTS (Things I Would Do Again and Again):
  • Tanzania has a tremendous network on national parks; do not simply go to one (i.e. Serengeti).  Use a tour company that will take you all around the country or even into Kenya and the Masai Mara.
  • This is the only place I've had the chance to do a balloon safari.  Not only did it start with a sunrise wee in the presence of a pride of lions (terrifying, exciting and thrilling!), but it was an absolutely spectacular way to see the landscape and the animals.  It is absolutely worth the money.  Plus, the way they have to take off and land due to wind adds some fun twists and turns (literally).
  • Arusha is a lovely town and I'd recommend Four Points as a hotel.  It's right in the center of town, whichalso happens to be the halfway point between Cairo and Capetown on the Continent as a fun fact.
  • The Tanzanite Experience is not the sort of thing I'd ordinarily recommend, but it's worth it for the <10 minute video on how they mine this rare gem, in the one mine in the world where it's found
  • Planning for Safari:
    • While Tanzania was full of animals and brilliant landscapes, unless you're adding on Zanzibar, Masai Mara or a Kilimanjaro climb, I ultimately think there are better countries to visit first to truly experience the wonder of the African bush.
    • If you're interested in experiencing Africa and/or safari, let's talk--simply reply to this post.  I've visited 12 countries on the continent and safari'ed in 6 of them.  I have no doubt we can find the right option for you--at last!
